Asher’s Birth Story

This is a brief montage telling the amazing story of Asher’s Birth. He was born only a month early at 36 weeks, but due to complications caused by gestational diabetes he was born severely ill. He was mediflighted twice after birth and spent his first week on full life support. He was on a vent, had blood transfusions, tons of IV’s, a feeding tube, and so many wires I couldn’t keep count. After his birth, I went into congestive heart failure so I was put back into a hospital across town. My amazing husband juggled all of this while taking care of our other two boys. After a few weeks Asher fully recovered and we thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time. We are truly blessed

Please never underestimate the effects of gestational diabetes. I followed my diet and took my medicines and my diabetes was considered “well controlled” I never imagined what my son would go through to survive. He has fully recovered now but still struggles with lung damage related to the ventilator and chest tubes. Asher has had many hospitalizations and he requires nebulizer treatments 4 times per day every day of the year and in the future he too will have to be tested for diabetes. I am no longer diabetic so please don’t think that just because your diabetes isn’t severe, it isn’t serious. Most cases of gestational diabetes that are well controlled do not end up the way mine did, but I just want people to be aware it can and does happen.

diabetes + pregnancy?

Filed under: Diabetes Pregnancy Risks — admin @ 11:39 pm

i have type 2 diabetes. it was undiagnosed until i became pregnant and apparently very uncontrolled as my HBAIC measures 9.7. I am now working on getting in target and am doing well with a few little setbacks every couple of day or so. my concerns is this….during my first 11 weeks i was very high and undiagnosed. now im terrified my baby will have birth defects. We have seen several strong, healthy heartbeats and normal activity etc. my dr has never once mentioned the risk of birth defects to me, i read it online…….any thoughts?!?!?!

I share your pain – I’m a diabetic with an unplanned pregnancy. When you read online it is frankly terrifying. This isn’t my first pregnancy so that really helped me come to terms with it because I know what to do, what to expect. But pregnancy is an emotional time, no doubt about it, and you were thrown quite a monkey wrench to think about.

Now here’s what I know about doctors, especially OBs: they understand that pregnant women are feeling very vulnerable, and a few words from them could lead to a crying jag at home. So they are pretty careful about loading you down with the scary stuff. OBs try to keep you calm and happy, because that’s best for baby – but if they see something to worry about, they will definitely let you know. Go to all the tests, do the ultrasounds, do all your appointments and keep the medical team happy.

I totally understand your worry, but it’s not helping you at this point, just making your diagnosis harder to take. The best thing you can do is focus on your blood sugars for now, knowing that you are doing the best thing you can for your baby.

Like dingding said, it’s very encouraging that you are out of the first trimester! So take heart, try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy a little.

Now pregnant with second child & had gestational diabetes with first?

Filed under: Diabetes Pregnancy Birth Defects — admin @ 11:39 pm

I haven’t checked my blood sugar since a few weeks after my daughter was born 2 years ago. Now I’m in early pregnancy with 2nd baby and just found out that high blood sugar can cause birth defects. I’m pretty sure that the gestational diabetes went away, but I’m scared that maybe it didn’t. Has anyone had high blood sugar early in pregnancy but went on to have a normal child?

Gestational diabetes is gestational diabetes because it only occurs during pregnancy, otherwise, it would be regular diabetes!

If you had chronically high blood sugars from non-gestational diabetes, you probably would have known it before now.

Do not worry. Just talk to your doctor at your first appointment.

How does gestational diabetes affect pregnancy?

Filed under: Diabetes Pregnancy Diet — admin @ 11:39 pm

I’m 28 weeks and I failed my first glucose test. They are going to retest me in the 3 hour test next week. I don’t really eat much "simple" sugar and I get plenty of exercise a day so I don’t know what will be expected of me. I’ve also been loosing weight my entire pregnancy (I think due to better diet and exercise) and don’t know what roll this plays in gestational diabetes. I’d like more info on what the effects of gestational diabetes can have on me and my daughter if I don’t pass the next test and they certify me as diabetic. Thanks.

When you have gestational diabetes, your body is not breaking down the sugars that you are taking in, and they linger too long in the blood stream and are not taken up by the cells in your body for use in metabolism. When there is too much sugar in the blood stream, it goes to the baby. They baby can put on excess weight. The lack of sugar being able to be taken up by the cells affects the placental cells, which help create amniotic fluid, which filter products of the blood stream, so in theory it creates a more toxic environment for the baby. They do not understand all of the ways in which excess blood sugar causes complications with the baby, but women with gestational diabetes are at a higher risk for stillbirth and premature labor. The baby can be born excessively large, making vaginal delivery more dangerous and raising risk for ending up with a c-section, baby can have unstable blood sugar levels after birth when it is "cut off" from your supply, which can lead to temperature instability too.

So even if you don’t feel any ill effects, the effects still can be very serious. This is why it is important to follow whatever diabetic diet they prescribe, monitor your blood sugars carefully, and if you need to take meds or insulin do it as prescribed. And don’t feel like a failure or that you did anything wrong or shouldn’t have it because you did everything right. . . gestational diabetes is just a spontaneous disease which you cannot control.

What are the warning signs of gestational diabetes?

Filed under: Gestational Diabetes — admin @ 11:39 pm

I am 27 weeks pregnant, I go in for my glucose test in 3 weeks. I was just wondering if there are any warning signs that I may have gestational diabetes. This is my second pregnancy, I didn’t have any problems with my first pregnancy nor do I have a history of diabetes or high blood pressure or anything like that. I have just been feeling really sick the past few days. Every time I eat I feel very nauseous and sometimes even have stomach pain. Does anyone know if this is normal? Thanks.

increased thirst and urination
swelling of hand and feet
nausia and dizzyness
feeling shaky before meals
same as if you had high blood sugar.
also the baby may show to be large in size on an ultrasound. as far as your symptomes thats just pregnancy in general.

Like the person above me said, you cannot have type 1 and not take insulin for over a year and not die.
